Calling Juniors Riders!

If you are a 13.5 -18 year old (or know someone who is) and have an interest in riding, racing, biathlons or triathlons and could use a mentor or two, this program is for you.

The Savannah Wheelmen are commited to Junior riders and development.  The Savannah Wheelmen believe that we need to encourage young people to come to the sport. Cycling is neither easy or a “main stream” sport in the US like it is in many other parts of the world where it is second only to “football” or soccer. However, unlike many of our main stream sports, cycling is one you can enjoy and even compete in from your teen years to over age 75.

Many legendary US cyclists, Tour de France winners and Olympic medalists started at the junior level of age 12 – 14 : Greg Lemond and Connie Carpenter to name but two. Ms. Carpenter married fellow Olympic and pro cyclist Davis Phinney and their son, Taylor, progressed from junior competitions and is himself an Olympian and professional cyclist.

Today in Georgia, High School leagues are being created and college scholarships are available. With the support and encouragement of experienced and seasoned adult cyclists of the Savannah Wheelmen we can introduce you to the sport and get you started.  We can ride with you on Saturdays as part of the large group ride known as “the Gallery Espresso” ride that departs at 8 am from Bull and Perry St (downtown Savannah).

Our program can expand - but we need juniors to do so.

What You Will Need to get going:

You will need a geared road bike with drop handle bars, and strap or clipless pedals (no mountain bikes or single speeds please)
Certified Biking Helmets are REQUIRED (there should be a sticker inside the helmet to let you know it has been certified, if you have any questions please let us know).

Everyone will need to have a spare tube in case of a flat.  The mentors will be glad to give a demonstration on how to fix a flat in the field if the need arises.

Meet your Ride Leader:

Mike Taxter

Mike has ridden competitively since the early 80s in the Midwest, Southwest and New England. He is currently a category 3 master and has raced at the national level and was highly ranked in New England before moving to the Savannah area.  Mike can assist with bicycle fitting, mechanics, rules of the road and is a current board member of the Savannah Wheelmen.

"My riding experience is what I am happy to lend to anyone who wants to take up the sport.  The mentors I had in my early years were very generous and I hope to pay it forward." - Mike
